IRNA - An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale jolted Bam in southeastern Iranian province of Kerman on Monday.

According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 04:57 hours local time (01:27 GMT) at the depth of 11 km underground.

The epicenter of the quake was located at 58.34 degrees longitude and 29.12 degrees latitude.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Monday Head of Kerman Crisis Management Office Majid Saeedi said the tremor has brought no casualties or damage to properties.

He added that a crisis management committee was set up immediately and the rescue teams were dispatched to the quake stricken area.

Iran sits on major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.

In 2003, a 6.6-magnitude quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.
