Sputnik - China's possible decision to increase its imports of Iranian oil could offset the negative impact of US sanctions on Iran's oil industry, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on Thursday.

"We do not fully understand how the consumers fromthe Asia-Pacific region will react, and whether China will increase its imports [of Iranian oil]. There will be no change [on the market] if the flow ofIranian oil is redirected. There are a lot ofuncertainties that we do not fully understand today," Novak said onthe sidelines ofthe Russian Energy Week..

Novak pointed outthat the move would affect Chinese-US trade relations, triggering another stage oftrade war betweenBeijing and Washington.

"These volumes are insignificant forthe Chinese economy, so if there is a decision [to stop importing US oil], the Peoples Republic ofChina will be able toshift toother sources withoutany problems," the Russian minister added.

Media reported onWednesday citing the president ofChina Merchants Energy Shipping Co (CMES) thatshipments ofUS crude oil toChina had been stoppedamidthe escalating China-US trade war.

Irans envoy tothe Organization ofthe Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Hossein Kazempour Ardabili said inlate September that other OPEC members will be unable tocompensate formissing Iranian oil supplies onthe market afterUS sanctionsagainstTehran enter intoforce.

The United States started reimposing sanctions onIran afterwithdrawing fromthe Iran nuclear deal inMay. In early August, Washington imposed the first package ofsanctions targeting Iran's purchase ofUS dollar banknotes, trade ingold and other metals aswell astransactions involving its national currency.

The second package is set tobe introduced inearly November and hit Iran's energy sector and oil exports, amongother things.
