Sputnik - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tuesday that thanks to the meetings and negotiations held in recent weeks, including the meeting of the Russian and Turkish leaders in Sochi, the war in the Syrian province of Idlib was prevented.
On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a meeting inRussia's Black Sea resort ofSochi, which lasted almost 4.5 hours. They have agreed tocreate a demilitarized zone alongthe contact line betweenthe armed opposition and government troops inIdlib byOctober 15.
"Intensive responsible diplomacy overthe last few weeks-pursued inmy visits toAnkara & Damascus, followed bythe Iran-Russia-Turkey Summit inTehran and the meeting is Sochi-is succeeding toavert war in #Idlib witha firm commitment tofight extremist terror. Diplomacy works," Zarif said onTwitter.
The city ofIdlib is the last remaining stronghold ofanti-government insurgents and al-Qaeda-linked terror groups inSyria.
