UNHCR chief lauds Iran's leader support for Afghan refugees

IRNA - UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) chief on Monday lauded support granted by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei for the Afghan refugees.

The Leader of Islamic Revolution's decree in support of Afghan children's education was a big step forward worth admiring, Filippo Grandi noted during his visit to a refugee camp in the capital, Tehran.

He praised the Iranian government's commitment and its attempts to provide service to refugees.

Iran can become an example for other countries, the UNHCR chief stressed.

Iran's minister of education said recently that 470,000 children from other countries, mostly from Afghanistan studied in Iranian schools last year.

Mohammad Bathaie noted, 'This is an honor for the Islamic Republic of Iran to provide for the citizens of other countries equal status with Iranian children in order to learn science and knowledge.'
