Minister denies protesters' death in southwestern Iran

IRNA Iran's interior minister on Sunday denied death of any protesters during the unrest in the city of Khorramshahr in Iran's Southwestern Province of Khuzestan.

'Nobody has died during the unrest in the city of Khorramshahr,' Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli told journalists at a press conference.

'Just one person has been injured as a result of shootings,' Rahmani Fazli said, adding that the wounded protester was transferred to the hospital.

'During street protests some people get provoked while there are others who take advantage of the situation and embark on actions that result in tarnishing of the security and disciplinary conditions,' he said.

The police and disciplinary forces are responsible to maintain security, the Iranian minister added.

When the security and order are tarnished, the police and disciplinary forces have to carry out their duty to restore them, Rahmani Fazli stressed.

Water shortage and pollution of fresh water resources have recently caused protests in some cities in the Khuzestan Province.

Khorramshahr was also the scene of similar street protests on Saturday.
