EUs package to save JCPOA not offered yet: Mogherinis spokeswoman

Tasnim Maja Kocijancic, the spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, dismissed reports about sending a package of proposals to Iran to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Ms. Mogherini has not made any comment about the JCPOA in recent days, Kocijancic told Euronews Persian service on Saturday.

Since Washingtons pullout from the nuclear agreement, the European Union has been making all-out effort to preserve the deal, and Mogherini has repeatedly voiced the blocs support for the accord, she added.

Her remarks came after some media outlets on Saturday quoted Federica Mogherini as saying that the EU has ratified a package to support the Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), with 28 affirmative votes and has submitted it to Iranian officials.

Kocijancic went on to add that the EU foreign policy chief did not make any comment about the package on the sidelines of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on May 28.

The European Union is trying to adopt objective and precise measures to preserve the JCPOA, she said.

On Saturday, Irans Foreign Ministry also said the country had not still received a proposal the European Union has pledged to make for saving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that Washington was walking away from the nuclear agreement, which was reached between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China - plus Germany in 2015.

Trump also said he would reinstate US nuclear sanctions on Iran and impose "the highest level" of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

Since the US president pulled Washington out of the historic nuclear deal, European countries have been scrambling to ensure that Iran gets enough economic benefits to persuade it to stay in the deal.
