Saudi Arabia to allow women in the Kingdom drive unaccompanied to Bahrain



Sputnik - Women from Saudi Arabia will be able to drive cars and cross into neighboring Bahrain by car without men on June 24, when the permission to drive cars for Saudi women officially comes into force, Saudi Ambassador to Bahrain Abdullah bin Abdulmalik Al-Sheikh said.



"Saudi women have the right toindependently cross bycar intoBahrain viaKing Fahd Causeway onJune 24, and Bahraini women can come bycar toSaudi Arabia and drive acrossits territory withoutbeing unaccompanied bymen starting fromnext Sunday," Abdulmalik Al-Sheikh told Akhbar al-Khalidj newspaper inan interview.


In September 2017, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud signed a royal decree, which allows Saudi women todrive cars, forthe first timeinhistory ofthe country.

In January, women inSaudi Arabia were allowed toattend football matches forthe first time.

Saudi Arabia has been repeatedly criticized bythe international community forits human rights violations, including the discrimination againstwomen aswell asthelack ofwomen empowerment.

The situation has started tochange recently asin 2013, late Saudi King Abdullah appointed 30 women tothe Shura Council, his highest advisory body, while in2015 women voted and ran ascandidates inthe municipal elections. Their campaigns, however, was hampered bythe factthat women inthe kingdomcould not directly address men, who are not related tothem and thus could only talk withthe female voters.
