Sputnik - The Russian Defense Ministry has commented on a joint US, British and French missile strike on Syria, which took place on the day, when the OPCW experts are set to start a probe into allegations of a chemical attack in Douma, a claim denounced by Damascus as a provocation.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that most missiles launched bythe Western states onSyria had been downed bythe Arab Republic's air defenses, when approaching targets.
"The Syrian air defense system has been conducting an anti-air fight," the ministry added.
According tothe Russian Defense Ministry, Syria repelled the Western attack byair defense complexes made inthe USSR over30 years ago.
"Syrian means ofair defense: S-125, S-200 air defense systems, Buk and Kvadrat were used inthe repelling the missile strike."
Syrian air defense forces have intercepted all 12 cruise missiles, which had been used toattack the Dumeir military airfield, according tothe Russian Defense Ministry.
Russia's air defenses haven't been used torepell the missile strike onthe territory ofthe Syrian Arab Republic, the military said.
"None ofcruise missiles launched bythe USand its allies did not enter the zone ofresponsibility ofthe Russian air defenses, covering objects inTartus [naval facility] and Hmeymim [airbase located inthe Latakia province]," the Russian Defense Ministry explained.
According tothe Russian military, the massive missile strike onobjects ofmilitary and civilian infrastructure was conducted byUS warships jointly withthe UK and French air forces at3:42-5:10 Moscow time.
A total of100 cruise and air-to-surface missileswere launched attargets inSyria, the Russian Defense Ministry stated, noting that two US warships carried outthe attack fromthe Red Sea, aswell astactical aviation overthe Mediterranean Sea and B-1B bombers fromal-Tanf area.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova,has slammed the Western states' move, saying that the strike "has been launched atthe capital ofa sovereign state that has been fighting forsurvival foryears amidterrorist aggression."
Earlier inthe day, the United States, the United Kingdom and France launched missile strikes ona number oftargets inSyria inresponse toanalleged chemical attack inthe Damascus' suburb ofDouma, Eastern Ghouta, which has been blamed onDamascus despitethe launch ofa probe intothe incident. On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that it had proof that the "chemical attack" inDouma had been a provocation and had been staged byWestern-backed NGOs, including the White Helmets.
While Pentagon chief James Mattis said that US airstrikes onSyria were a "onetime shot," Joint Chiefs ofStaff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford told reporters that Washington had no more attacks planned atthe moment.
According toDunford, the United States utilized normal deconfliction channel withRussia and did not coordinate targets beforethe airstrikes onSyria. At the same time, he said he was not aware "of any Russian activity," when asked whether any Russian defenses engaged US, French or British ships or missiles missiles.
When commenting onthe possibility ofa US missile strike onSyria afterallegations accusing Damascus ofa chemical attack inDouma, which has yet tobe probed byinternational experts, the Russian Defense Ministry has warned that Moscow would respond if its troops inSyria were threatened.
Russia's military bases inSyria's Latakia the Hmeymim airbase and the Tartus naval facility have been secured byS-400, S-300 air defense systems, aswell asPantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile system. According tothe Russsian Defense Ministry, the S-400 and Pantsir systems provide air cover tothe Russian aviation grouping atHmeymim, while the S-300s protect Russia's naval facility.
