Iran, Uruguay call for expansion of economic ties

MNA Irans FM Mohammad Javad Zarif and Uruguayan President Tabar Vzquez have called for promotion of economic cooperation in all areas.

Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held talks with the President of Uruguay, Tabar Vzquez, in Montevideo on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Zarif hailed the traditional and continuous relations between Iran and Uruguay, and said the ties have always been based on mutual respect.

Given the good grounds for cooperation between the two countries, especially in the economic sector, bilateral cooperation and its diversification must be put on the agenda, he noted.

Zarif also highlighted the need for making use of the great cooperation capacities in the two countries that have not been used so far.

Moreover, due to the Uruguayan presidency over Mercosur, Irans greater link with the trade bloc through cooperation with Montevideo and Brasilia was discussed in this meeting.

Cooperation in the fields of banking, agriculture, construction of dams and knowledge-based companies were the other issues on which the two sides conferred.

For his part, Vzquez welcomed the expansion of bilateral ties, emphasizing that the economic cooperation between Uruguay and the Islamic Republic of Iran must be promoted in all areas.

Following the meeting, the Iranian top diplomat held talks with his counterpart Rodolfo Nin Novoa, Vice President Lucia Topolansky and President of the House of Representatives, Jorge Gandini, as well as participating in a meeting of businessmen from both countries.

Zarif embarked on a four-nation tour on Sunday, including Senegal, Brazil and Uruguay. The foreign ministers last stop will be Namibia, where he will meet with senior political, economic, and parliamentary officials and exchange views with them.
