Iranian Speaker lauds police forces’ prudence in dealing with riot in capital

Tasnim – Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani praised the Law Enforcement forces for their prudence and restraint in dealing with a recent riot in northern Tehran, in which rioters killed five security forces.

Speaking at an open session of the parliament on Thursday, Larijani offered his condolences over the martyrdom of security forces in an attack by members of the Gonabadi Dervishes, a Sufi community in Iran, during the riot.

He further expressed his gratitude to the “selfless” commanders and personnel of the Law Enforcement for their solidity and wisdom during the riot in the Pasdaran Street in northern Tehran.

In a statement read out in the open session of the parliament, the lawmakers also condemned the “inhumane and savage” moves of the rioters and hailed the patience and prudence of the police forces.

The MPs further called on the Judiciary to bring to justice the rioters and outlaws who threatened order and security in the capital.

On Tuesday, Police Spokesman Brigadier General Saeed Montazer-al-Mahdi told Tasnim that the Law Enforcement forces had arrested more than 300 members of the Gonabadi Dervishes, including the drivers of a bus and a car that plowed through a group of police forces.

In the attacks by the dervishes, three Law Enforcement forces and two members of the Basij (Mobilization) Force were killed.

Thirty police forces were also injured and many public and private properties were destroyed in the clashes, Montazer-al-Mahdi said.

The rioters had gathered in front of a police station in northern Tehran, demanding the release of some members of their community.

A video on social media showed a white bus plowing through a group of around 40 riot police officers in a narrow street.
