'No deadline extension for registration of hopefuls: Interior minister

Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar says May 11 as the deadline for presidential hopefuls to register will not be extended.
Registration of hopefuls for the 11th presidential election ends tomorrow (Saturday) at 6 p.m. (1330 GMT) and this deadline will not be extended, Mohammad-Najjar said on Friday.

By Friday noon, 336 presidential hopefuls have signed up for the countrys upcoming presidential vote, he said.

There are eight women among the registered hopefuls, added the minister.

The hopefuls will be vetted by the Guardian Council and the final list of candidates will be announced five days after the end of registration, Mohammad-Najjar explained, adding that the supervisory body could ask for another five days if necessary.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election. The winner of the June 14 polls will replace incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
