Irans Larijani offers condolences over deadly terrorist attacks in Iraq

Tasnim Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani expressed his condolences Friday over the deaths and injuries of dozens of Iraqi and Iranian nationals as a result of two terrorist attacks south of the Arab country.

Expressing deep sorrow over the deaths of the Iraqi people, Larijani conveyed his condolences to the speaker and members of the Iraqi parliament, as well as the bereaved families of the victims.

The senior Iranian official also offered deep sorrow over the martyrdom and injuries of several Iranian pilgrims in the terrorist attacks, calling on relevant Iranian organizations in the Arab country to follow up on the issue and facilitate the treatment of the wounded.

He added that the Daesh Takfiri group has resorted to conducting such attacks in the Arab country as it is facing successive defeats on the battle ground.

According to a statement released by Iraqs Dhi-Qar Police headquarters, sixty-six people were killed and 97 others were wounded when Daesh militants carried out a coordinated attack targeting a security checkpoint and a restaurant in the south of Iraq on Thursday.

Daesh claimed responsibility, saying it targeted Shiites in the outskirts of Nasiriya city in the south of Iraq, according to a Daesh statement circulating on Daesh telegram channels.

An armed attack on a restaurant was followed by a car bomb and a suicide bomber at a nearby checkpoint, the police statement said.

Security officials foiled a Daesh attack on a second restaurant nearby, but several security officials were killed and wounded in the exchange of fire.

Iraqi security officials killed six of the attackers, the statement added.
