UN maritime agency praises Iran activities

IRNA Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Kitack Lim in a letter has appreciated Irans efforts in the global body and its participation in IMO activities.


In his letter to Deputy Minister of Road and Urban Development Mohammad Saeed Nejad, Kitack praised Iran government for its commitment and continuous supports.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is an IMO active member state and Iran permanent representative in IMO has an active participation in the expert meetings of the organization.

As a specialized agency of the United Nations, IMO is the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping.

The organizations main role is to create a regulatory framework for the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented.

Iran plays an active role in some 29 international conventions of IMO including Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes, International Convention Relating to Intervention on the High Seas in Cases of Oil Pollution Casualties, International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships and Special Trade Passenger Ships Agreement (STP).
