Tehran Mehr housing to conclude by March

Financial Tribune- The construction of remaining units of Mehr Housing Project in the Iranian capital will be completed by the end of the current fiscal year (March 20, 2018), announced the director of housing and construction at Tehran Roads and Urban Development Office.

"With the completion of Mehr housing units and their transfer to applicants, we extended infrastructure services to Mehr housing in cities of over 25,000 people in Tehran Province since four years ago," Parviz Firouz was also quoted as saying by Fars News Agency.

The official elaborated that providing safety and meeting the educational, recreational and religious needs of people living in the aforementioned sites constitute these infrastructure services.

"In line with these services, we granted lands with suitable uses and allocated subsidies," he said.

The controversial large-scale construction plan dubbed Mehr Housing Project was conceived and initiated during the tenure of the former administration, but did not finish by the end of the eighth year of ex-president Mahmoud Ahmadenijad's term in office.

The project, which aims to provide low-income people with housing units through free land and cheap credits, dragged on during the first tenure of President Hassan Rouhani and has caused many headaches for the government that has been continuously pressured to finally see it through the finish line.

According to Firouz, a number of buildings built as part of the project in Tehran are currently being used by the Ministry of Education for educational purposes, while others are serving religious, law enforcement and medical purposes.

"In the past four years, a total of 383 billion rials ($10.2 million) worth of cheap loans has been allocated by the government to implement the project," he said.
