Sputnik - UK Prime Minister Theresa May declared on Friday that the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) states want Russia and Iran to use their influence over the Syrian leadership to to deliver a ceasefire and move to a "genuine political process."
MOSCOW (Sputnik) The heads ofthe Group ofSeven (G7) countries have common view that Iran and Russia, asstates supporting the government ofSyrian President Bashar Assad should exert their influence tostrive forSyrian conflict settlement, May said.
"We agreed that it would be impossible todefeat terrorism withouta political settlement that brings a stable transition away fromPresident Assad. We welcomed the progress towardsde-escalation but [made] it clear that the regimes backers Russia and Iran must use their influence todeliver a ceasefire and move toa genuine political process," May said ata press conference held inthe follow-up tothe G& meeting.
Syria has been inthe state ofcivil war forsix years, withgovernment forces fighting againstboth Syrian opposition groups who strive tooverthrow Assad, and numerous extremist and terrorist groups such asDaesh and Jabhat Fatah al Sham, both ofwhich are outlawed inRussia.
Russia and Turkey are the guarantors ofa nationwide Syrian ceasefire regime that came intoforce onDecember 30, 2016 and onMay 6, 2017, Russia, Turkey and Iran signed a memorandum onthe establishment offour safe zones inSyria aspart ofthe Astana talks onSyrian settlement.
The G7 presently involves Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Russia used tobe the group's member for16 years until2014, when the seven states boycotted the G8 summit inRussias Sochi, citing disagreements overthe Ukrainian crisis.
The G7 meeting, scheduled forMay 26-27, is held inthe Sicilian town ofTaormina.
