Syrian opposition HNC wants UN to control upholding Syrian ceasefire

Sputnik - The United Nations should join the efforts aiming to control the implementation of ceasefire regime in Syria and implement some mechanisms, which will provide its upholding, the Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) said in a statement on Saturday, obtained by Sputnik.





DUBAI (Sputnik) On May 12-13, the Committee's members gathered fora regular monthly meeting inthe Saudi capital ofRiyadh and discussed the upcoming roundof the Geneva negotiations onthe Syrian settlement.

"The Committee insists onthe necessity, that the United Nations should play a role insecuring the ceasefire agreement, implement the mechanisms ofits upholding and also impose obligations onthe conflicting parties," the statement said.

The Committee added that it wished a success inany initiative aimed atreducing the Syrians' suffering and expressed readiness toparticipate inany international efforts aimed atthis.

"The Committee is committed tothe political process underthe auspices ofthe United Nations inGeneva The core issues ofthe political process are the political transition ofpower, ceasefire, release ofprisoners, delivery ofhumanitarian aid, protection ofcivilians. All these things are written inthe UN Security Council resolution 2254," the statement said.

Syrian settlement talks take place ontwo parallel platforms: the UN-mediated Geneva talks, and the Astana talks, brokered byRussia, Turkey and Iran. The fourth roundof Astana talks, held onMay 3-4, resulted inadoption ofmemorandum onestablishment offour safe zones inSyria. According tothe memorandum, no clashes betweengovernment forces and armed groups should take place inthe zones starting fromMay 6.
