Moon Jae-in wins S Korean presidential election
MNA Moon Jae-in has become the new South Korean president, gaining over 40 percent of votes in the election, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) announced. Moon Jae-in fromthe South Korean Democratic Party onWednesday became the new president ofthe Asian nation withsupport of41.1 percent ofvoters, the NEC said.

About 13,4 million ofSouth Korean nationals participated inthe election, the NEC added, ascited bythe Yonhap news agency.

A total of13 hopefuls took part inthe presidential race aftertwo nominees had dropped out. Moon Jae-in ofthe liberal Democratic Party ofKorea was considered asone oftwo main rivals alongwith and Ahn Cheol-soo ofthe center-left People's Party.

The vote took place less thantwo months afterPresident Park Geun-hye was ousted followinga corruption scandal that also led toher arrest.

The new president ofSouth Korea will take office onMay 10, immediately afterthe confirmation ofthe results bythe NEC.
