Sputnik News- IRGC Deputy Commander for political affairs Brig. Gen. Rasul Sanayee Rad claims that Tehran is not planning to establish a military base in the Syrian province of Latakia.
Tehran is not planning toestablish a military base inthe Syrian province ofLatakia despitemedia allegations, Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Deputy Commander forpolitical affairs Brig. Gen. Rasul Sanayee Rad said Monday.
On Sunday, Breitbart News online outlet reported that Tehran was close toreaching an agreement withSyrian President Bashar Assad onestablishing its naval base inSyrian Latakia asa payment forIranian support duringthe six years ofthe civil war.
"Our presence inSyria consists inthe presence ofmilitary advisers atthe request ofthe Syrian government. We do not plan tocreate a military base inthe Syrian province ofLatakia. Such an atmosphere is being formed todestabilize the situation inthe region and create disagreements betweencountries," Rad told reporters.
Iran, Russia and Turkey are guarantor states ofthe Syrian truce, which was established onDecember 30. The countries brokered intra-Syrian Astana talks onJanuary 23-24, which gathered Syrian armed opposition and government forthe first time and resulted inan agreement onthe establishment ofa trilateral mechanism tomonitor the ceasefire inSyria.
