Iran, Italy cooperate in energy sector

February 26, The Iran Project Iran has agreed to develop a joint MoU with Italy on how to cooperate in the field of energy, water and wastewater.

In a meeting with Italy's Minister of the Environment Gian Luca Galletti on Saturday, Iran's Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian referred to Iran-Italy's long history of diplomatic and economic relations, expressing hope that the two countries can revive the ties in the post-sanctions era.

After Iran's signing the historic Paris Agreement, the country has implemented many programs, including 7500 renewable power plants (wind, solar, geothermal and biomass) to commit the agreement's obligations, Chitchian noted.

He stressed that the equipment of Iran's first geothermal power plant, that is scheduled to be installed in next few months, made by an Italian company, adding the two countries can also cooperate to develop water and wastewater projects.

Touching upon the opening of a credit line between Iran and Italy as one of the main obstacles for the development of cooperation between the two countries, Iran's energy minister said we hope that Italy put the issue on the agenda.

Italy's Minister of the Environment Gian Luca Galletti, for his part, stressed the need for implementing the Paris Agreement commitments and said the agreement is a treaty among majority of the world's countries and implementing its obligations required the development of cooperation in the environmental sector in different countries.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he pointed to the presence of more than 10 Italian companies in Tehran International Exhibition of renewable energy, saying this indicates Italy's interest in Iran's energy market.
