TEHRAN, Oct. 04 (MNA) Iranian researchers from Sharif University of Technology studied the possibility of using nanoparticles to modify concrete structures by applying various types of nanomaterials.
According to Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC), this research also determined the optimum amount of nanoparticles and it can be used in industrial scale in the future.
The aim of the research was to evaluate the effects of various sizes of silicon nanoparticles on mechanical properties and microstructure of concrete. Modified concrete enables acquirement of the desired resistance by using smaller structural elements and lower consumption of concrete. The durability and lifetime of the structure are higher than those of normal concrete which results in economic save.
Adding silicon nanoparticles with high ratio of surface to mass and activity increases the number of desired reactions, and these reactions modify mechanical properties of concrete.
In this research, silicon nanoparticles were added at various sizes and concentrations to concrete mixture, and the produced concretes were analyzed considering the mechanical properties, microstructure and electrical resistance.
Results of the research have been published in Construction and Building Materials, vol. 113, 2016, pp. 188-201.
