Pres. Rouhani off to Cuba

Margarita Island, Venezuela, Sept 19, IRNA President Hassan Rouhani on Monday left Margarita Island in Venezuela, where the 17th NAM summit was held, for the Cuban capital.

The visit to Havana is upon an invitation by Cuban President Raul Castro with the aim of further expansion of Tehran-Havana ties.

Addressing the NAM summit meeting in Venezuela, President Rouhani briefed the participants on the measures taken by Iran during its four-year presidency over the organization. Rouhani then handed over NAM presidency to Venezuela.

Iran was given the presidency of NAM during a meeting in Tehran for a three-year term but as Venezuela was not ready to host the NAM summit meeting last year, Iran's presidency over the NAM was extended for another one year.

In his Cuba visit, Rouhani is also scheduled to meet with Fidel Castro, the leader of the Cuban Revolution.

Then the president will leave Havana for New York where the 71st UN General Assembly meeting is to be held.
