IRGC commander praises Afghans for fighting against ISIL in Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi hailed the Afghan resistance forces who have joined the Syrian army in the war on ISIL.

"Today, in light of the resistance shown by the brave young people and fighters, including the dear Afghan brothers, the filthy and criminal conspiracy of the arrogant stream and the Zionist front manifested in the form of the criminal ISIL group has failed," Fadavi said in the Northeastern city of Mashhad on Tuesday, in a meeting with families of Afghan resistance forces participating in anti-terrorism operations in Syria under the name of 'Fatemiyoun Brigade".

The Liwa Fatemiyoun also known as the Fatemiyoun Brigade and Fatemiyoun Division, is an Afghan Shiite group formed in 2014 to fight against the terrorists in Syria. Based on media reports, it numbers over 20,000 men.

The core fighters of the Liwa Fatemiyoun is constituted of the fighters of the Shiite group Muhammad Army, which was active during the Soviet war in Afghanistan and against Taliban, until its collapse after the US invasion of Afghanistan, as well as the Abuzar Brigade, an all-Afghan Shiite group who voluntarily fought in the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988).
