MKO elements to leave Iraq by end of summer: Envoy

Baghdad, Aug 4, IRNA Remaining elements of Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) will leave Iraq by the end of summer, Iranian Ambassador to Baghdad Hassan Danaiifar said.

Speaking to Islamic Republic News Agency, Danaiifar said that presence of the MKO elements will come to an end in Iraq within the next the 45 days.

The Iraqi government in cooperation with the United Nations has already expelled 65 percent of the MKO elements and the rest of them are expected to be expelled till the end of summer, the ambassador said.

He noted that Iraqi government had planned expulsion of the MKO terrorist elements from years ago.

But due to pressures from the United States and some of its allies, their expulsion has been delayed till now, he said.

He referred to the MKO collaboration with the deposed Iraqi ruler Saddam in suppressing the 1991 uprisings in southern Iraq and also carrying out the massacre of Iraqi Kurds and said that expelling the MKO elements is the request of both Iraqi people and the government.

The MKO terrorist group had to flee Iran shortly after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 after carrying out a spate of assassinations and bombings which took the lives of many top officials and civilians.
