Iranian, Afghan diplomats hold talks in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iran and Afghanistan held a new round of bilateral political consultations at the level of deputy foreign ministers on Wednesday.

The meeting was held in Tehran between Irans Deputy Foreign Minister for Asian and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour and Afghanistans Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai.

The two diplomats discussed ways to promote cooperation between Tehran and Kabul in political, security, military, economic and cultural fields as well as in the fight against terrorism and narcotics.

They also weighed plans to boost bilateral trade ties, regulate the residence of Afghan nationals in Iran, implement a trilateral agreement on transportation between Iran, Afghanistan and India, complete a railroad linking Irans Khaf to Afghanistans Herat, promote regional and international cooperation and work on educational programs.

Back in May, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani traveled to Iran to sign the trilateral agreement between Iran, Afghanistan and India on the establishment of an international transit corridor via the Iranian port city of Chabahar.

While in Tehran, Ghani had a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, during which he voiced Kabuls willingness to cement closer regional cooperation with Tehran.
