BAKU, August 2 /TASS/. The presidents of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran - Vladimir Putin, Ilham Aliev and Hassan Rouhani - will meet in Baku on August 8 to discuss the North-South transportation corridor, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov and Mahmoud Vaezi, Irans Minister of Communications and Information Technology, said at a meeting on Tuesday.

"The ministers noted that the North-South transportation corridor will become one of the main topics at the trilateral meeting of the heads of state and expressed confidence that the project would be a great contribution to developing inter-regional cooperation," the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministrys press service said.

The sides stressed the importance of the forthcoming trilateral meeting.

Vaezi, a co-chairman of the Azerbaijani-Iranian State Commission for Cooperation in the economic, trade and humanitarian spheres, is staying in Baku to prepare a visit of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Azerbaijan.

According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry press service, Mamedyarov and Vaezi were satisfied with the level of bilateral cooperation in the transport, pharmaceutical, machine-building industries, the oil and gas sector; the energy industry as well as agriculture, tourism and other spheres.

The North-South transportation corridor will connect Northern Europe and South-East Asia via the railway systems of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.
