India launched a first of its kind pilot project in the country to run a two wheeler on CNG.
New Delhi (Sputnik) The Indian government launched an ambitious program tocurb rising air pollution inits cities. The first ofits kind project named 'Hawa Badlo' involves 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) retrofitted two wheelers (scooters and motor bikes). Hawa Badlo inhindi means 'clean the air.'
Member ofParliament Meenakshi Lekhi says, the "pilot project is a sign ofgrowing India-Iran cooperation, asthe Iranian kits have been used forretro-fitment."
The scooters are being retrofitted witha CNG kit manufactured byM/s Ituk Manufacturing India Pvt. Ltd inpartnership withan Iran based company where the project toinstall CNG kits in0.4 million two wheelers is underway.
The Ministry ofPetroleum & Natural Gas ina statement says, "Hydrocarbon emissions fromCNG retrofitted two wheelers are 75% less and CO emissions are 20% less ascompared topetrol driven similar models."
The Center forScience & Environment study says two wheelers are responsible forone-third ofvehicular pollution inDelhi.
The CNG kit fortwo wheelers comprises two CNG cylinders of4.8 liters ofwater capacity each, which can be filled withup to1 kg ofCNG ineach cylinder. These CNG retrofitted two wheelers can drive upto 120 kms ina single fill and are expected tobe substantially economical ascompared toa similar petrol run vehicle atthe current level ofprices.
