Iran's ambassador expects twofold increase in tourism with Russia in 2016

Iran's ambassador to Russia expects a twofold increase in the tourist flow between the countries this year.

ST.PETERSBURG (Sputnik) Iran's ambassador toRussia expects a major growth intourist relations betweenthe two countries in2016, Iran's Ambassador toRussia Mehdi Sanaei said atthe St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

"I am sure that this year we will witness a twofold increase inthe tourism area," he said.

Earlier this year, Sanaei suggested that Tehran may unilaterally cancel tourist visas forRussian citizens.

Russias agreement withIran simplifying visa requirements fortourists, businesspeople and other categories oftravelers took effect onFebruary 6.

The 2016 SPIEF is taking place onJune 16-18. The agenda forSPIEF 2016, which is held ata new venue forthe first time in20 years atthe Expoforum Convention and Exhibition Centre includes business forums ofthe Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS, and the Business 20.

According tothe organizing committee, the number ofcontracts atSPIEF is expected tobe not less thanin 2015 when the total volume ofagreements reached 293 billion rubles ($4.4 billion). Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov said onTuesday that the number ofSPIEF participants would exceed 10,000 this year, compared to7,500 in2015.
