US President Barack Obama has expressed concern over the Republican Party and its infighting and nomination for this year�s presidential race.

Speaking on Jimmy Fallon�s "The Tonight Show", which is due to be aired late on Thursday, Obama said, "The truth is actually I am worried about the Republican Party."

Obama said the US has a two-party political system which has to be "serious� and should �solve problems."

"They've got philosophical differences and they have fierce debates and they argue and they contest elections," he was referring to clashes between Democrats and Republicans. "But at the end of the day, what you want is a healthy two-party system."

The US president said the Republican presidential nominee should be able to do the job and understand the issues at hand.

"But what's happened in that party culminating in this current nomination, I think is not actually good for the country as a whole," Obama said, apparently in reference to Donald Trump and his campaign which has had incendiary rhetoric against minorities, women and others.

"It's not something Democrats should wish for. And my hope is that maybe once you get through this cycle, there's some corrective action and they get back to being a center-right party� And we start figuring how to work together."

Obama has previously criticized Trump for his call to ban Muslims from entering America, offering to build a wall between the US and Mexico to halt illegal migration and other fiery rhetoric against minority groups.

This year�s US presidential race has been specially marred by countless instances of scandals, mudslinging and onstage vulgarity, where rivals have time and again seized opportunities to blacken their opponents and push them down the gutter.
