TEHRAN (Tasnim) � Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari strongly condemned the Tuesday terrorist attack in Iraq�s holy city of Karbala, which killed and injured a number of people.





In a statement late on Tuesday, Jaberi Ansari offered his condolences to the Iraqi people and government as well as the bereaved families of the victims.

�Countering the threat of terrorism and extremism requires national solidarity of the Iraqi nation and serious support by the international community,� the Iranian spokesman noted.

A car bomb exploded in central Karbala, 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of the capital Baghdad, near the house of Karbala Governor Aqil al-Turaihi on Tuesday, leaving at least five people dead and 11 others wounded.

Iraqi sources said the bombing occurred five kilometers away from the shrines of the third Shiite Imam, Imam Hussein (AS), and his brother Hazrat Abbas (AS).

In a statement later in the day, Daesh terrorist group (also known as ISIS or ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack. The terrorist group has been wreaking havoc on Iraq's northern and western parts since June 2014.
