US welcomes Saudi plans to send ground troops to Syria to fight Daesh

The United States welcomes Saudi Arabias willingness to send ground forces into Syria to fight the Daesh jihadist group, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) On Thursday, the Saudi embassy inWashington said ina Twitter message that the Saudi Ministry ofDefense stood ready todeploy ground troops toSyria toaid inthe US-led international anti-Daesh coalition efforts.
That kind ofnews is very welcome. I look forward todiscussing that withthe Saudi defense minister [Mohammad bin Salman] next week that and other kinds ofcontributions that Saudi Arabia can make, Carter said, asquoted ina press statement.


According toCarter, the coalitions representatives are due todiscuss the issue inBrussels next week.
So the reason why I'm going toBrussels next week is tobring the full weight ofthe coalition behindaccelerating the defeat ofDaesh, the defense secretary added.


Riyadh has been a nominal member ofthe US-led coalition that has been launching airstrikes againstDaesh inSyria sinceSeptember 2014, withoutthe permission ofDamascus or the United Nations. In December 2015, Saudi Arabia started its own Muslim 34-nation coalition tofight Islamic extremism.

Daesh is a Sunni group, outlawed ina number ofcountries, including the United States and Russia.
