US paralyzed its Syrian policy by demanding Assad ouster

Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said that the US policy in Syria has been damaged by the initial demand that Syrian President Bashar Assad had to leave office.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The US policy inSyria has been damaged bythe initial demand that Syrian President Bashar Assad had toleave office, former Secretary ofDefense Chuck Hagel said.
"We have allowed ourselves toget caught and paralyzed onour Syria policy bythe statement that Assad must go," Hagel said ina Wednesday speech atthe Atlantic Council.


The former Defense Secretary argued that the US policymakers "never asked that question: what is coming afterAssad."

The only resolution tothe ongoing civil war and humanitarian crisis inSyria depends ona "platform ofstability," Hagel maintained.
He noted that there no possibility ofstability inthe Middle East "unless the Russians, the Iranians, the United States and the Arab states are part ofthat."


The United States is currently working withRussia, Iran and numerous Arab states underthe auspices ofthe United Nations toresolve the crisis inSyria. The International Syria Support Group is sponsoring meetings onJanuary 25 betweenthe Syrian government and opposition factions toachieve a political resolution tothe five-year crisis.
