The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) of Gulf Arab States will hold an extraordinary ministerial meeting in Riyadh on Saturday, January 9 to discuss the repercussions of an Iranian protest attack on the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Tehran and the countrys General Consulate in Mashhad after the execution of a prominent Shia cleric by Saudi Arabia.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) The meeting will be held underthe chairmanship ofSaudi Arabian Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir.
Last weekend, protesters stormed the Saudi Arabian embassy inIran afterRiyadh executed top Iranian Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr, alongwith dozens ofother people convicted of "terrorism." Nimr al-Nimr had demanded more rights forShiites, who are a minority inSaudi Arabia, where most citizens are Sunni Muslims.
Shortly afterthe unrest, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties withIran. Bahrain followed inits footsteps, together withSudan and Djibouti. The United Arab Emirates also scaled downits diplomatic representation inIran and Kuwait recalled its ambassador.
