Policy Director of think-tank Just Foreign Policy Robert Naiman claims that the creation of a new Saudi-led Islamic states coalition against terrorism caught the Obama administration by surprise, indicating erosion of US influence in the region.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The creation ofa new Saudi-led Islamic states coalition againstterrorism caught the Obama administration bysurprise, indicating erosion ofUS influence inthe region, Policy Director ofthink-tank Just Foreign Policy Robert Naiman told Sputnik.
"I think it's a very interesting development," Naiman stated. "The US claims that it welcomes it, butdid not know aboutit inadvance, and is looking forward tolearning more aboutit. That's telling."
Naiman said this aspect ofthe new initiative highlighted the rapid erosion ofUS influence inthe Middle East.
"Not so long ago, Saudi Arabia wouldn't have made a move likethis withoutconsulting the United States and neither would have acknowledged acting independently. So, inpart this may be a reaction tothe increasing distrust ofthe United States bythe Saudis," Naiman explained.
Weakened ties betweenWashington and Riyadh, Naiman suggested, could lead tomore moderate and responsible policies fromboth governments.
"I think that's healthy forthe region and the world, forthe United States and Saudi Arabia tobe more independent ofeach other, and the relations betweenthe two tobe more transparent. It makes them both more accountable," he pointed out.
Naiman also noted the irony that the Saudis had fordecades lavishly financed extreme Islamist ideologies and jihadi terror forces, including inthe 1979-87 Afghanistan War.
"Part ofthe Saudi strategy toprotect itself againstterrorism has been toexport it. Oh, so you want tobe a jihadist? Here is the list ofSaudi government-approved jihads. Go there, and leave us alone," he remarked.
Now, however, the new Saudi-led coalition reflects a growing awareness inRiyadh that the fanaticism they had encouraged abroad forso long might now be coming home tothreaten them, Naiman observed.
"If the Yemen and Syria civil wars are resolved politically and diplomatically, that might actually increase the terrorism risk toSaudi Arabia. The jihadis might come home toroost. So maybe they are preparing forthat," he said.
The new coalition reflected a significant policy change byKing Salman bin Abdulaziz, who succeeded his brother King Abdullah inJanuary, Naiman noted.
