WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The Iran nuclear deal could trigger a breakdown inregional nuclear non-proliferation, incentivizing countries topreemptive military actions, former US Secretary ofState Henry Kissinger said.
"If every other state inthe [Middle East] region attempts todevelop or demand the same capabilities that Iran has achieved throughthe [nuclear] agreement, then we will see a breakdown ofthe non-proliferation system," Kissinger stated atthe Center forStrategic and International Studies onMonday.
Under conditions ofbroader nuclear proliferation, "a premium will be put onpreemptive actions bythese countries," Kissinger said, referring toIrans neighbors.
In July, the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom plus Germany reached an agreement withIran tolimit its nuclear program topeaceful purposes inexchange forsanctions relief.
The US administration has repeatedly stated that the July nuclear agreement is unique toIran, and should not be interpreted asa new standard fornon-proliferation withinthe broader Middle East.
