FM deputy: Iran pursuing Roknabadi's fate via int'l bodies

Tehran, Nov 5, IRNA Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Iran was pursuing the fate of its former ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Roknabadi through the United Nations (UN) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Talking to IRNA on Thursday, Amir Abdollahian said officials at Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization as well as Iran's embassy in Saudi Arabia have held talks also recently with the Saudi officials of Roknabadi's case.

The Saudi charge d'affaires in Tehran has been informed of Iran's efforts for several times, he noted.

Saudi Arabia, he said, is responsible for the Mina tragic incident on September 24 that claimed lives of many pilgrims including 464 Iranians.

Roknabadi and 27 others are among the missing Iranian pilgrims in the incident.

Iran, he stressed, will persist on efforts to clarify fate of all Iranians gone missing in Hajj tragedy.

The disaster occurred on September 24 when large crows of pilgrims were caught in as stempede in Mina, a few kilometers east of Mecca, on their way to perform the 'stoning of the devil' ritual at Jamarat.

The tragedy was largely blamed worldwide as an outcome of the incompetence and mismanagement of the Saudi officials in administrating Muslims' largest annual ritual.
