At least one gunman was killed in a shootout between police and armed suspects in southeastern province of Siirt on Tuesday, governor's office said in a statement

The statement said the skirmish erupted when two suspects, including a woman, defied police's order to stop. One of the armed suspects, believed to be linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), was killed while the other suspect was captured.

A police officer was injured in the foot during the shootout and taken to Siirt State Hospital, the governor's office said.

The incident in Siirt follows deadlier violence in areas close to the Iraqi border. A 22-year-old man was shot dead in Silvan, where police put three neighborhoods under curfew.

The deaths come just three days after stunning electoral victory of the ruling party on Sunday. Right after the polls, Turkish warplanes launched air strikes against PKK targets in northern Iraq, keeping the promise to continue fighting against the group after the elections.

"The AKP has decided to persist with a war that will bring Turkey face-to-face with big crises at home and abroad," the PKK said in a statement carried by the F?rat news agency, which is close to the militant group.

In Y�ksekova, a district in Hakkari on the Iraqi border, two men were shot dead in clashes between police and members of the PKK youth wing, one of the group's most radical elements.

Erdo?an had been credited with negotiating a peace process with the PKK beginning in late 2012, but the slow-moving talks ground to a halt before a June election, in which his AK Party lost its single-party majority for the first time since 2002.
