No need in revisiting Iran's Parchin military facility – IAEA head

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said that there is no need in a second visit to Iran's Parchin military facility.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — There is no need in a second visit to Iran's Parchin military facility, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano said.

Last week, Amano visited Tehran to meet with top Iranian officials and begin the implementation of a roadmap allowing the IAEA to inspect any site it chooses, as part of a deal to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities. Prior to Amano's visit, local experts collected and sent to Vienna the samples of soil and air at the site suspect of hidden nuclear activities.

"I don't think so. We have already some samples," Amano told RIA Novosti Saturday, commenting on the necessity of the second visit to Parchin.

He added that the recent visit was useful and now the agency "can move forward."

Several Western authorities had suspected Tehran of intending to build nuclear weapons under the guise of peaceful nuclear research. Representatives of western governments suspected that the Parchin military facility was developing a key component for an Iranian nuclear weapon delivery system.

On July 14, following the signing of Iran’s historic nuclear deal with six world powers, guaranteeing the peaceful nature of Tehran's nuclear activities, Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) and the IAEA signed a roadmap agreement to clarify possible military aspects of Iran's past and present nuclear activities, including those of the Parchin military site.
