Former US Democratic senator Mike Gravel says the American business community would be punished because of the ridiculous opposition stance of Congress over the Iran nuclear agreement.
In a phone interview with Press TV on Monday, Gravels commented on a truly ridiculous statement made by Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina, who believed regardless of what Congress decides about the agreement, the rest of the world has moved on with its implementation.
Fiorina said, Even if Congress votes this deal down, and I sincerely hope they will, the rest of the world has moved on in terms of the money flow."
The statements that she is making are truly, truly ridiculous because you cannot reverse whats going to happen and here is whats going to happen, the Congress wont be able to stop this treaty from going through and even if they did, it would be the embarrassment of the world, Gravel said.
Iran and the P5+1 group of countries -- the US, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany announced the conclusion of nuclear negotiations in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on July 14.
Under the agreement, restrictions will be put on Irans nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
What youre seeing is a rush by the European business community to get to Iran, Gravel said.
He stated that in case of the rejection of the agreement by the Congress, what will happen is the American business community is the only one is going to be punished because of the ridiculous nature of these Republicans in the Congress.
This business community makes contributions to the members of Congress besides AIPAC and so I think what you are going to see is a turnaround of some votes, he noted.
He, however said, The situation in my mind is not that dangerous. Its going to be approved by the United States through the presidents office and whatever the Congress does, the Congress will do. But I doubt that theyll be able to stop the legislation and of course they wont be able to change the situation once the sanctions have been removed.
The treaty has been negotiated. Its been accepted by the presidents administration, and its been accepted by all five European countries and that cannot be reversed by any stretch of the imagination, he said.
He finally added Fiorina is like so many other Republicans, [who] are making fools of themselves with the ridiculous statements that they are making.
