Resolution 2231 unique in terminating sanctions: Rouhani

Tehran, Aug 2, IRNA - President Hassan Rouhani said the UN Security Council 2231 last July was unique in the history of the world body in the case of overriding its previous sanctions.

In a nation-wide televised interview on Sunday night, he defended the nuclear deal reached between Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers and said, according to UN resolutions Iran was wrongly considered as a threat to global security under Chapter VII of UN Charter.

President Rouhani said, the nuclear deal and the resulting UN resolution helped to move Iran out of Chapter's provisions.

To a question, he said radioactive contamination of some of Iran's nuclear equipment which later turned out to be because of using second-hand machines, had resulted in the misconception that Iran had a suspicious military purpose in its nuclear project.

He said the equipment Iran had purchased from a third country, was wrapped in brand new packages, but they were used ones and it became a source of suspicion.

President Rouhani said that from very beginning he was confident in victory and believed in a win-win situation based on constructive interation with the world and serving the national interests.

He rejected some concerns that any negotiations will result in surrendering or defeating and assured that military secrets of the country will not be uncovered due to the agreement and Iran's joining the Additional Protocol to nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

To a query, he added that the entire global community, with an exeption of few war-mongering countries, is upbeat about the nuclear deal with Iran.

Referring to the visit of foreign trade and diplomatic delegations in the wake of the nuclear agreement, he added, the deal has opened the doors to foreign technology and capital and will faciliate Iran's exports after sanctions are lifted.

In this connenction, he referred to a meeting with the visiting French Foreign Miniter Laurent Fabius in Tehran last week, during which it was agreed that in the post-sanction period Iran and France will work in joint export projects.

President Rouhani's further comments during the interview will follow.
