Alan Eyre, a US State Department spokesman, has called as a tragic misstep the shoot-down on July 3, 1988 of Iran Air Flight 655 by the USS Vincennes.

Eyre further said that the US administration has apologized to families of the victims of the deadly incident which left 290 Iranians, including 66 children, killed.

The spokesman, who is in Vienna for nuclear talks, added that it was a blunder which left innocent Iranians dead.
