TEHRAN (Tasnim) � Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said enemies are seeking to cause insecurity in the country with the aim of undermining the Islamic Republic's power and influence in the region.

In a meeting with Chairman of Iran's Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi late on Sunday, Amir Abdollahian briefed the cleric on the latest developments in Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Bahrain, and highlighted Iran's status in the region and the world.

"Due to Iran's power in the region, enemies are after insecurity in our country," he said, adding, however, that they will never reach their goals against the country.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the diplomat pointed to the arrogant powers' supports for the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group, saying that the countries, led by the US, tried to "change the government in Syria and undermine the Islamic Awakening" by supporting the Takfiri group.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.

The US and its regional allies have been supporting the militants operating inside Syria for more than four years.
