A French senator voiced the European country's keenness to expand ties with Iran, expressing hope that the ground would be prepared for enhanced relations once sanctions are lifted as a result of sealing a final deal between Iran and the major powers to resolve the long-drawn-out dispute over Tehran's nuclear program.

Deputy Chairman of the French Senate's Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Armed Forces Daniel Reiner, who is on a visit to Iran at the head of a six-member parliamentary delegation, made the remarks in a meeting with head of the Majlis Women and Family Faction Fatemeh Rahbar in Tehran on Tuesday, ICANA reported.

Highlighting Iran's role in addressing the current crises in the Middle East, Reiner said, "As a regional power, the Islamic Republic can significantly contribute to the establishment of peace and security and to (efforts aimed at)heading off conflicts."

The Iranian lawmaker welcomed the delegation's visit and said such meetings provide good opportunities for exchange of views on various issues between the two sides, especially at a time when foreign media reports about Iran do not reflect the realities of the country.

Expressing regret over recent developments in the region, Rahbar called on France as a "leading" European country and a member of the UN Security Council to clarify its stance on the tragic killings of the defenseless people in Syria and Yemen.

Referring to the ongoing nuclear talks with the six world powers known as the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany), she said, "Iran's efforts on the nuclear front are directed toward the peaceful use and proper exploitation of nuclear technology." She also said despite foreign pressure and sanctions, Iran continues its activities, stressing that the Islamic Republic will remain insistent on preserving its independence under any circumstances.
