TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian foreign ministry announced that it has send a letter to Riyadh to protest at the Saudi-led coalition attacks near Tehran's mission in the Yemeni capital.

"We have sent a protest letter after the airstrike near the Iranian embassy and summoned the Saudi charge de 'affairs," Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham told reporters in her weekly press conference in Tehran on Wednesday.

"In addition, a report was sent to the UN Security Council so that the Council takes the necessary measures to prevent the repetition of these attacks," she added.

Afkham underlined that countries should respect diplomatic immunity of other states' staff and centers and avoid harming them.

Before Afkham's remarks, Iranian Ambassador to the UN Gholam Ali Khoshrou also strongly condemned attacks on diplomatic missions in crisis-hit Yemen, and stressed that Riyadh should be held accountable for its airstrikes on areas close to the Iranian embassy in Sana'a.

In a letter to the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, Khoshrou said that the Saudi air raids have twice hit areas close to the Iranian embassy in Sana�a over the past two months.

"I would like to warn that a repetition of similar airstrikes close to my country's diplomatic representation in the future can have serious consequences, including for the safety and security of Iranian diplomats in Sana�a," Khoshrou said in his letter to the council.

The Iranian envoy urged the Security Council to urgently address the issue of the Saudi military campaign against Yemen that began without a UN mandate on March 26.

In April, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned the Saudi charge d'affairs in Tehran after a rocket hit an area near the Iranian embassy in Sana'a, Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has been bombing Yemen in the last 77 days to bring its ally, fugitive president Mansour Hadi, back to power.

The airstrikes have so far claimed the lives of more than 4,504 civilians, mostly women and children.

According to a recent report by Freedom House Foundation, most of the victims of the deadly Al Saud campaign are civilians, including a large number of women and children.
