Iran, UN envoy confer on Yemen

Tehran, June 6, IRNA - The United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed phoned Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to discuss with him the latest developments in Yemen in the wake of Saudi-led aggression.


The UN envoy said that based on his meetings with Yemeni groups and Ansarullah, he is optimistic on the success of a political solution to settle the crisis in the impoverished Arab country.


Referring to the inter-Yemeni negotiations to be held on June 14 in Geneva, he said UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon has stepped up his efforts to end attacks on the verge of the holy month of Ramadhan.


Strongly condemning Saudi regime's continued aggression against Yemeni civilians, the Iranian official urged immediate halt to the attakcs and thanked the UN envoy for his efforts.


Amir-Abodollahian referred to the human siege of Yemen and urged UN to take effective measure to end the anti-humanitarian move against the war-hit Arab country.


He stressed inter-Yemeni dialog without foreign intervention as proposed in Iran's four-point peace plan and called for serious UN action according to its charter to eliminate such invasions in the modern world.


He also reiterated Iran's suppoprt to Yemen's soverignty and helping its people against terrorism and termed the Saudi invasion a strategic threat which is contrary to the regional security.
