US must coordinate Syria airstrikes with Damascus: Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says the USs refusal to coordinate its airstrikes against purported ISIL targets in Syria with Damascus has been a mistake, saying such coordination is a must.

It is absolutely clear to me it was a mistake still is not to coordinate the air strikes with the activities of the Syrian army. Thats what we believe must be done, Lavrov said in an interview with the US-based international Bloomberg Television on Tuesday.

And that is what unfortunately our American colleagues cannot accept for ideological considerations, Lavrov said.

Since last September, the US-led coalition has been targeting what are said to be ISIL positions inside Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate. The US and some of its allies have also been conducting air strikes against purported ISIL positions in Iraq since August 2014.

Lavrov also said that the Takfiri group is advancing in Iraq, Syria, Libya and Afghanistan, warning that the terrorist group can go very far, very far and can threaten Russia if not reined in.

They already make a lot of progress in Iraq, in Syria and are expanding into Libya and even in northern Afghanistan, which is very close to Central Asia, which is next door to Russia, Lavrov warned.

ISIL is operating in Syria and Iraq, where government forces are active fighting the terrorist outfit back.
