Spokeswoman: Iran resolved to expand relations with Bulgaria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham underlined that Tehran is resolved to broaden its relations with Bulgaria.

"The Iranian government is determined to strengthen cooperation, interaction, dialogue and understanding (with Sofia)," Afkham said in a meeting with Head of Bulgarian state news agency Maxim Minchev in Tehran on Thursday.

Afkham, meantime, pointed to the status quo of media cooperation between Iran and Bulgaria, and said, "Iran welcomes media cooperation with foreign countries."

Afkham pointed to the media hype practiced by mainstream media against Iran, and said that unfortunately, the Islamophobia is being promoted in Europe.

Minchev, for his part, voiced pleasure in the achievements of his visit to Iran, and said he is much interested in Iran's cultural heritage and expressed the hope that he could write a book on Iran's attractions in the coming years.

Last month, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Bulgaria's new ambassador to Tehran Christo Polendakov called for the promotion of Tehran-Sofia relations in various political, economic, scientific and tourism fields.

"There are abundant potentials for the expansion of relations between the two countries and the two sides are sufficiently resolved to make use of the existing capacities," Zarif said during the meeting on April 12.

The Iranian foreign minister underlined the need for the further expansion of bilateral ties in political, economic, parliamentary and cultural fields.

The Bulgarian ambassador, for his part, pointed to the status quo of Sofia-Tehran relations, and said, "Iran has a considerable market capacity and during my mission in Tehran I will be looking for the broadening of all-out ties."

Iranian and Bulgarian officials have tried in recent years to elevate bilateral ties in various sectors.

Bulgaria, officially the Republic of Bulgaria, is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the North, Serbia and Macedonia to the West, Greece and Turkey to the South, and the Black Sea to the East.
