Iran calls for formation of inclusive Yemen government

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that Iran wishes for an inclusive government to be formed in Yemen.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Iran wishes for an inclusive government to be formed in Yemen, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Monday.

The last, fourth point [of Irans peace plan for Yemen] is to build an inclusive national government in Yemen, with the participation of all groups and organizations," Amir-Abdollahian said at a press conference held at Rossiya Segodnya press center in Moscow.

Yemen has been mired in violence in recent months since Houthi rebels took over government buildings and forced President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and his government to resign. The group later created a presidential council in a "constitutional declaration."

In late March, a coalition headed by Saudi Arabia started carrying out airstrikes at Hadis request. Despite the fact that the coalition announced the end of its campaign in late April, the airstrikes continue.

According to UN estimates, at least 1,850 people have been killed and some 7,400 injured in the airstrikes and fighting on the ground since mid-March in Yemen.

In April, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif proposed a four-point peace plan aimed at ending the ongoing violent conflict in Yemen. The plan includes a ceasefire, humanitarian assistance to all those affected by the violence, intra-Yemen dialogue and the creation of a government with the participation of all Yemeni groups.
