Iran expresses regret over death sentences in Egypt

Tehran, May 19, IRNA Spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry Marzieh Afkham expressed regret on Tuesday over the recent death sentences handed down by an Egyptian court.

Afkham expressed concern about the action of the Egyptian court, stressing that some conflicts could be solved through national talks and political agreements.

'Such verdicts that encourage aggression will have negative impact on the reputation of the ancient country of Egypt,' she said.

She further urged Egypt to avoid taking such decisions.

An Egyptian court on Saturday imposed death sentences on the deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi for organizing attack on a prison and a mass jailbreak during the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak.

The court also delivered death sentences to over one hundred of others.

Morsi was ousted in a coup staged by the Egyptian Army in July, 2013.
