Followers of divine faiths can uproot extremism: Larijani

Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani has called on all followers of divine faithsto help uproot the evil phenomenon of terrorism and extremism.

Extremism will harm all followers of divine religions, including Muslims, Christians, Assyrian, Shias and Sunnis, Larijani said on Sunday, adding the eradication of the dangerous scourge requires collective cooperation among followers of divine religions.

Larijani made the remarks in a meeting with head of the Chaldean Catholic Church, Patriarch Louis Raphael I Sako, in Tehran.

Pointing to the existing crises in Syria and Iraq, the Iranian speaker said terrorism isnot rootedin Islamic societies, but has emerged as a result of interference in the two Arab countriesby certain Western statesand their regional allies.

The ISIL Takfiri terrorist group, with members from several Western countries, controlsswathes of land in Iraq and Syria, and has been carrying out horrific acts of violence such as public decapitations and crucifixions against all communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.

Sako, for his part, said terrorism is the enemy of all people, calling for concerted efforts by all followers of divine religions to seriously tackle the menace.

He described Iran as a major and influential power in the region, expressing hope that the Islamic Republic would continue playing its role in the settlement of the crises in the Middle East region.
