President hails teachers key role in society
Tehran, May 4, IRNA President Hassan Rouhani attended a ceremony here Monday to hail the national Teacher's Day which is held nationwide to commemorated the martyrdom anniversary of Ayatollah Morteza Motahhari.




Ayatollah Motahhari was assassinated on May1, 1979 by a member of the terrorist group of Forqan.

Mottahhari, winner of the UNESCO Prize in 1965, was a cleric, philosopher, lecturer, and politician who emphasized on teaching rather than writing.

His martyrdom anniversary is marked in Iran as the national Teacher's Day.

The main duty of teachers 'is to promote religion and help Iranian students find a better understanding of it,' President Rouhani said in his address to the Teacher's Day ceremony which was also attended by Minister of Education Ali-Asghar Fani, Chief of Staff of Presidential Office Mohammad Nahavandian and special aide to the President Hossein Fereydoun are present in the gathering.

'Teachers taught us how to read, write, understand and research,' said the President.

He stressed that teachers also teach ethics to the Iranian siblings.
